Evonik Industries Case Study

Overview Evonik Industries

Evonik Industries AG, one of the world’s leading specialty chemicals companies, enjoys a long and illustrious history dating back to its birth in Berlin, Germany in 1847. Today, Evonik Industries employs over 32,000 people, with its corporate headquarters based in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The Problem

Evonik manufactures silica dust, a chemical used in products such as tooth paste, flour for anti-caking, plastics, and various other food products. Unfortunately, silica dust can also be quite dangerous if it is not used in a controlled environment. It has been classified as a human lung carcinogen. In addition, inhaling silica dust can also lead to other respiratory illnesses such as:

  • Silicosis
  • Tuberculosis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

While Evonik has taken appropriate measures to protect their workers with proper air filtration systems in their manufacturing plant, replacement cartridge filters are costly and typically need to be replaced every 6-8 weeks. Clean filters are critical to ensuring optimal filtration. Additionally, these used filters cannot be recycled, creating excessive waste in the long-term.

The Solution

Diversitech’s Green Filter Cleaning Machine (GFCM) provided the perfect solution to Evonik’s filter replacement issues. Its ability to clean and re-use dirty cartridge filters up to 6 times translated into greatly reduced filter replacement costs and landfill waste. In addition, the GFCM offers additional protection to workers by automating the hazardous filter cleaning process. In short, the GFCM provided a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution!

Conclusion

Evonik is very pleased with the many benefits offered by Diversitech’s Green Filter Cleaning Machine. They are happy to report they experienced a full return on their investment within 18 months.
